Who doesn’t love a fresh mushroom on their pizza or in a Stroganoff? Mushrooms around the world are adored in many food sources, but if you choose a special type of mushroom then your dining experience may take a rather magical turn. Known as magic mushrooms, shrooms, mushies, psychedelic mushrooms, psilocybin cubensis these mushrooms cause differences in mood, perception and behaviour that are commonly known as “tripping.” The genus magic mushrooms belong to is called Psilocybe with many purists insisting that Psilocybe mushrooms are the “true” magic mushroom. Psilocybe mushrooms cause hallucinations because they contain the psychotropic tryptamines psilocybin and psilocin (some species also contain other, weaker psychotropic compounds like baeocystin or norbaeocystin). A single mushroom contains anywhere from 0.1 to 1.3 percent psilocybin, there are more than 100 types of psychoactive Shrooms that have been categorised and recognised. Research reveals these species consist of Psilocybin, which is the psychoactive component in magic mushrooms. Some varieties of magic mushrooms include psilocybe cubensis, coenocyte and panaeolus.
